Owl pellets provide clues to owl's diet

Even though most owls are nocturnal hunters and we can’t see what they hunt, we know a surprising amount of information about their diet. An owl’s feces look like any other bird dropping, so we can’t tell what they eat. The clues to an owl’s diet lay in owl pellets--regurgitated pellets of indigestible material such as bones, fur, fish scales and teeth--because owls swallow their prey whole.

Ben Carson displays Naples student’s “Flat Stanley” project

Every year, students in Mr. Alverez's class at Naples Elementary School participate in a "Flat Stanley" project, where they mail off a paper man named Stanley to someone, whether a family member, celebrity, or world traveler, and have the recipient take a picture with him. Fourth-grade student Rad Hanson decided to send his to Ben Carson, a presidential candidate nominee.

Airport gained momentum after rough start

With the Parker Ridge fire this summer, the Boundary County Airport was very active. Helicopters and other aircraft associated with the fire utilized the airport for refueling and staging. In addition there were the regular aircraft visiting the airport, students flight training, scenic flights and business-related flights.

Flying trykes - yes siree they are here!

BONNERS FERRY — A trike fly-in will be held at Boundary County airport from July 29 to Aug. 2. An open house will be held on Aug.1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. so people can talk to the pilots and learn more about trike flying. There will be flying activity each evening around 6 p.m. so viewers can see the trikes take off and how they operate.

Kootenai Tribe to host pow wow July 10-12

BONNERS FERRY —The Kootenai Tribe will hold a pow wow during Kootenai River Days. The pow wow will begin Friday evening on July 10 at 7 p.m. and end Sunday at 8 p.m. on July 12.

Badger golf season starts off with win on home course

BONNERS FERRY —The Bonners Ferry Badgers golf team got off to a good start in defeating Clark Fork and Mullan in a tri-match on March 24 at Mirror Lake Golf Course. The Badgers shot a team total of 190 to come in first with Clark Fork coming in second at 268 and Mullan third with a 290.

Millipedes don’t have 1,000 legs

While sweeping the garage last fall, I came across small carcasses that were c-shaped, hollow, white and smaller than a dime. I hadn’t seen any creature around that could have made them until last week when I moved the compost barrel.

Veterans’ reps to visit twice

Plan for road closures

BONNERS FERRY — If the weather forecasters are right, Boundary County drivers could see road closures go into effect early in February. Although front yards or fields may have little or no frost present, compacted roads that have been kept bare do have frost and it is now in the process of thawing from the top down, according to Jeff Gutshall, Boundary County Road and Bridge Superintendent.

River level to drop, accord to U.S. Corps

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Libby Dam, outflow for the Kootenai River will remain at 9 kcfs through Sept. 26, and then ramp down 1 kcfs per day starting Friday evening. Final outflow will be 6 kcfs for the remainder of the month.
